Class Procedures Tips
Compiled with the help of Jennifer Griffin, Biology major,
class of 1998
Organize the room environment for learning
- Make accessible to students:
- Reference books, field guides, posters.
- Specimens such as rocks, tortoise shells, animal skeletons,
etc.
- Live plants and animals, aquaria and terraria.
- Guidelines for live animal care.
- Chemical or anatomical models.
- Computers.
- Reserve a designated corner of the blackboard:
- List the day's activities, including instructions for when
students enter the room.
- Note impending due dates, exam dates.
- Post the following on a bulletin board near your desk:
- Fire drill procedure and other safety information.
- Classroom management procedures and consequences.
- Calendar.
- Seating chart within easy view for a substitute teacher
(e.g., on podium).
- Copies of diplomas, awards, newspaper articles about the
class or school, Polaroid pictures of lab groups, etc.
- Keep papers organized:
- Attendance/tardy records.
- Computerized gradebook.
- Keep a three-ring binder for each unit or quarter per
course.
- Initial pages for reference by substitute teacher should
include class roll, seating chart, and a "rainy day" lesson
plan which can be used at any time.
- Set up paper trays for each class:
- IN Tray for assignments due.
- OLD Tray for handouts missed if a student was absent.
- In filing cabinets near your desk, establish at least one
drawer per course and lab for resource materials.
- Create folders for each week or unit, perhaps each
lesson or lab plan.
