St. Gregory's University

A four-year liberal arts Catholic university in Shawnee. Established in 1876, the school is the oldest institution of higher education in Oklahoma . MUSEUMS/MAJOR ATTRACTIONS

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art

Located on St. Gregory's College campus, this museum contains one of the Southwest's most valuable collections of art and artifacts. Exhibits include works by Italian Renaissance artists as well as 19th and early 20th century European and American artists. Also at the museum is an Egyptian exhibit featuring two human mummies. Santa Fe Station and Museum

Built in 1902, this unique Richardson Romanesque style depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum features displays on Native American history and the Land Run of 1891. Open Tuesday-Friday 10-4. 614 East Main Street, Shawnee, OK. Phone: 405-275-8412.

Jasmine Moran Children's Museum

Entertaining and hands-on exhibits for children ages 3 to 12. Children may explore such exhibits as a grocery store, train, ambulance and other actual equipment. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10-5, Sunday 1-5. 1714 State Highway 9, Seminole, OK. Phone: 1-800-259-KIDS

Seminole Nation Museum

This museum features exhibits on Seminole history including an Indian peace medal collection, stickball dioramas, the Whipping Tree, the Old Wewoka Trading Post and replicas of a Florida Seminole house known as a chick-ee. The museum also includes displays on area history from the pioneer days to the oil boom of the 1920's. Open Tuesday-Sunday 1-5. 524 South Wewoka Avenue, Wewoka, OK. Phone: 405-257-5580.

The National Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague

Dedicated in the 1940's after Czechoslovakia fell behind the Iron Curtain, this shrine features areas for prayer and meditation. Open daily dusk to dawn. Gift shop open Monday-Friday 8:30- 3:30. Fourth Street and Broadway, Prague, OK. Phone: 405-567-3080.

 

MAJOR ANNUAL EVENTS

Potawatomi Indian Pow-wow

Shawnee Fall Arts and Jazz Festival
