Galaxy is provided as a free service by The Health Network. Galaxy was originally a prototype associated with the DARPA-funded Manufacturing Automation and Design Engineering (MADE) program. It was intended to explore technologies for providing large-scale directory services in support of electronic commerce. Galaxy was begun in the summer of '93, and went online January '94. It's the oldest browsable/searchable web directory, and originally included a Gopher and Telnet directory in addition to web-based information.
