Division of Music:
Courses of Study

At Oklahoma Baptist University, music students have a wide variety of degree plans from which to choose -- they may select the course of study that will best prepare them for their own personal goals within the very wide field of music.

All students in all music degree plans take the music core comprised of courses in music theory, music history and literature, conducting, ear training and sight-singing, ensemble performance, recital attendance, and applied lessons.

Bachelor of Music Education

The Bachelor of Music Education degree enables students to teach in the public school system. Although at many schools the B.M.E. is a five-year degree, Oklahoma Baptist University offers it in a four-year plan. It meets and exceeds the State of Oklahoma requirements and standards for excellence in public school education.

Bachelor of Musical Arts

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music Arts degree are also some of the finest performers in the Division of Music. These students take the full complement of required music core courses, and in addition, are able to select a minor field outside the field of music. Typically students pursue minors that will enable them to study a wide variety of disciplines at the graduate level, or pursue careers in non-traditional music fields including (but not limited to) music therapy, ethnomusicology, or music missions.

Bachelor of Arts (music)

The Bachelor of Arts degree offered by the Division of Music is truly a liberal arts degree. It is designed for the student who desires a degree in music, yet wishes to pursue a truly "liberal" education. Students enroll in the major musicianship courses in music theory, ear training and sight singing, and music history, perform in ensembles, and study privately with a member of the music faculty. In addition, they are encouraged to embrace a wide span of courses from disciplines across campus, thereby enabling them to glean a meaningful liberal arts experience.
